The Lymington and District Naturalists' Society was founded in 1946 when a group of people from the Lymington area put forward a plan to establish a bird sanctuary on the marshes between the Old Rifle Butts on the sea wall and Hurst shingle bank.

The aim of the society is to promote the knowledge and understanding of natural history and allied matters by arranging lectures and field meetings.
